The sculptures of artisan Josep Maria Subirachs continue to influence and inspire the works within my Church Series. I was introduced to his work during a visit to the Basilica of La Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain. As I portray many of the architectural treasures of churches across the globe, I could not ignore the one who commissioned the church, His path to the cross, how He suffered and died that we might become united in spirit and love.
“Love was a Stranger” was painted in remembrance of the Christ I love, who is alive, and whose teachings I follow. Surrendered to love! In His presence I understand who I am without man’s expectations, I deal with my demons and find peace, I understand my calling and my potential with a heart full of gratitude.
Although the Christ sculpture is placed at the entrance exterior of La Sagrada Familia, I have chosen to surround it with many of the elements inside and out of the church where the story continues. The Chief Architect and Designer of La Sagrada Familia, the great Antoni Gaudi, believed that the people understood God more clearly and intimately in nature, which spoke to much of this design.
The Church Series continues…………as does my excitement of what comes next at the easel…….
