“A Legend of Love”
According to local legend, Pedro Huizar, a noted Spanish sculptor in the late 1700s was commissioned to provide some work for the San Jose Mission in San Antonio. Instead, Huizar decided to carve a monument to his lovely sweetheart, Rosa, who lived in Spain. When he completed the window he dedicated it to her. Thereafter Huizar sent for her. However she was shipwrecked and died while in route to him. Huizar never married and went on to carve the portal above the entrance to the Mission. A beautiful story, is it true? It’s left for you decide. I set out to paint, not the window, but the legend.
